Identical in Formula but Not Isotypic in Configuration: Discovery of a New Highly Polymerized [B12O24] Cluster in Cs3AlB6O12

Abstract: The discovery of new borates with unique structures has always been a growing part of solid-state chemistry, especially for polyborates. Herein, a new aluminoborate, Cs3AlB6O12, has been discovered by a high-temperature solution in a vacuum system. The highly polymerized [B12O24] cluster, unlike the annular configuration in previously reported polyborates, is found in Cs3AlB6O12 for the first time. The different linkage reflected by the local symmetry in cluster makes these borates not isotypic, although the f… Show more

“…The bond valence sum (BVS) calculations for Pb, Al, B, O, and F atoms provide values of 2.05, 2.84, 2.89–3.00, 1.90–2.22, and 0.84–0.92, which agrees well with the expected oxidation states of +2, +3, +3, −2, and −1, respectively. 40,41 The EDS analyses (Fig. S1†) confirm the presence of Pb, Al, B, O, and F elements, which further confirms the accuracy of the structure.…”

“…Borates are a rapidly growing research focus of crystalline materials not only due to their abundant structures 1–5 but also for their wide applications in photoluminescence-based materials, photocatalysis and especially nonlinear optics (NLO). 6–10 Compared with other inorganic NLO materials, borates have higher possibilities of acentric structures, which is a rigorous prerequisite of a NLO material.…”
