Identification and Mapping of Essential Fish Habitats Using Remote Sensing and GIS on Lake Victoria, Kenya

Abstract: Fisheries in Lake Victoria have been threatened by declining fish stocks and diversity, environmental degradation due to increased input of pollutants, industrial and municipal waste, overfishing and use of unapproved fishing methods, infestation by aquatic weeds especially water hyacinth, de-oxygenation and a reduction in the quantity and quality of water. Remote sensing and GIS are essential tools in detection of fishing grounds which is important in providing fish sustainability for human beings and allows … Show more

“…They are also used to develop biological surveys, evaluate reserve and management priorities, and foresee potential change under several scenarios for management or climate change [42]. Several researchers used the HSI to develop a model of potential fishing zones, as stated in studies [6], [25], [43]- [45]. Boitt and Aete [6] make use of surface temperature and chlorophyll-a remote sensing data by using a suitability index.…”

“…Several researchers used the HSI to develop a model of potential fishing zones, as stated in studies [6], [25], [43]- [45]. Boitt and Aete [6] make use of surface temperature and chlorophyll-a remote sensing data by using a suitability index. They discovered that locations with sea surface temperatures between 23.0 to 28.3 ˚C and chlorophyll-a concentrations between 0.72 to 1.31 mg/m 3 accounted for more than 90% of the total catch.…”

“…Estimations of suitable habitats for sea urchins followed the workflow (Figure 2) and methods reported by Meixler and Bain [8] and Boitt et al [9]. The used suitability method was the scoring and overlay of environmental variables and sea urchin individual numbers mapped into an intertidal zone map.…”

“…Estimations of suitable habitats for brittle stars followed the workflow (Figure 2) and method described by Meixler and Bain (2012) and Boitt et al (2021). The suitability method used was the scoring and overlay of environmental variables and brittle star individual numbers mapped into a sandy substrate map.…”
