Identification and traditional ceramic application of clays from the Chouamekh region in south-eastern Tunisia

ResumoOs cátions lítio (Li + ), sódio (Na + ) e potássio (K + ) encontram-se em primeiro lugar no plano de seletividade para a obtenção de bentonitas monocatiônicas a partir das policatiônicas, influenciando de forma específica o comportamento reológico dos fluidos de perfuração base água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a influência do Li + , Na + e K + na reologia de bentonitas do estado da Paraíba, Brasil, para uso em fluidos de perfuração à base de água. Os novos depósitos de bentonitas brasileiras foram comparados com base nas suas características químicas, físicas, mineralógicas, propriedades reológicas e de filtração. As amostras de bentonitas foram caracterizadas por meio da composição química através do método clássico, capacidade de troca de cátions, análise granulométrica por difração a laser, difração de raios X e análises térmicas. A reologia das dispersões foi estudada e determinadas as viscosidades aparente, viscosidade plástica e limite de escoamento com base nas normas da API e Petrobras, além dos estudos de inchamento em água e filtrado. Os resultados mostraram uma melhora significativa nas propriedades reológicas e de filtração das dispersões após a aditivação com os carbonatos de lítio e de sódio, nessa ordem, havendo presença de tixotropia nas curvas de fluxo das dispersões de argilas estudadas. The Gümüşköy (Kütahya, Turkey) kaolin deposit and its ceramic properties

The Gümüşköy kaolin clay deposit, located ~40 km northwest of Kütahya, Turkey, has promising reserves for ceramic production. In order to evaluate the potential use of this region, five representative clay samples were collected and characterized with X-ray diffraction, polarized light optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. According to the Chemical Index of Alteration and Plagioclase Index of Alteration, the kaolin samples were formed by strong chemical alteration of the Tavşanlı volcanites. The clays contain kaolinite, illite, pyrophyllite, montmorillonite and minor halloysite, as well as quartz, plagioclase (andesine), biotite, sanidine, rutile and goethite. The clay samples were used for thermal and physical tests. The plasticity, particle-size distributions firing properties (water absorption, apparent porosity, linear shrinkage, dry bending strength, fired bending strength) and colour parameters of the fired samples were determined. The kaolinitic clay samples from Gümüşköy are suitable for making wall tiles, floor tiles and kiln wares after shaping by dry pressing and extrusion.

In this contribution, a new raw material, Uşak clay (Usc), was investigated in order to assess its potential for the ceramic industry by comparing it with a world reference ceramic material, a Ukrainian clay (Ukc). Mineralogical characterization (X-ray diffraction [XRD], scanning electron microscopy [SEM] and Fourier-transform infrared [FTIR] spectroscopy), quantitative chemical analysis (X-ray fluorescence [XRF]) and the thermal properties of Ukc and Usc samples were investigated. Additionally, Atterberg limits, particle-size distribution and cation exchange capacity of both samples were determined. Various technological properties of Ukc and Usc were determined in the temperature range 800–1430°C. The bending and compressive strengths, total linear shrinkage, colour, water absorption and unit-volume mass values were measured. The findings from these analyses show that kaolinite-dominated Ukc and quartz-dominated Usc samples differ from each other not only mineralogically, but also in terms of their chemical, physical and technological properties. The firing colour of Usc was determined as 84% white, and so this can be considered as a light firing clay. In addition, due to its low plasticity, Usc may be utilized to reduce both the plasticity of the ceramic materials and the viscosity in slip-casting applied ceramics. Furthermore, the melting temperature of 1300°C suggests that Usc cannot be classified as refractory. However, this property does suggest an economic value for Usc in terms of developing technological characteristics at lower firing temperatures.
