Identification of efficient cropping zone for major pulse crops in Tamil Nadu

Abstract: An analytical study was carried over to identify the efficient cropping zone for cultivation of major pulses like Bengalgram, Pigeon pea, Greengram, Blackgram and Horsegram in Tamil Nadu. The data on area, production and productivity of the crops for the period from 1985-86 to 2015-16 (excluding 2014-15) were collected and analysed for their Relative Yield Index (RYI), Relative Spread Index (RSI).Based on the pooled result of the indices for thirty years the efficient cropping zones for the crops were identif… Show more

“…4). The reason accredited for superior RSI and RYI values in these districts for the marketing facility which is highly pronounced in these areas and the district Coimbatore is a most potential area for cotton production [10] farmers are practicing subsistence type of farming, the districts identified as MECZ, for the various crops discussed above has to be continued as MECZ in future also, along with prevailing agro climatic factors, marketing facilities, infrastructural development and remunerative price has to be provided. In order to bring ECZ areas under MECZ for the cotton crop, improved cultivars, advanced cultural practices, better management practices and availability of need based quality inputs at reasonable price must be tried.…”

“…Several studies have used RSI and RYI to identify efficient crop zones of various crops in Tamil Nadu, viz. rice, sorghum, black gram, cotton, sugarcane [6,7], pearl millet, red gram, , green gram, chick pea, horse gram [8], and efficient cropping zones for groundnut in Tamil Nadu [9]. But Efficient Cropping Zones of horticultural crops is still an exploration to be taken up by researchers and this paper determines to identify the hotspots of potato and chilli crops along with their zonal shift towards cropping.…”
