Identification of Evidence for Key Parameters in Decision-Analytic Models of Cost Effectiveness: A Description of Sources and a Recommended Minimum Search Requirement

Abstract: The paper proposes recommendations for a minimum level of searching for data for key parameters in decision-analytic models of cost-effectiveness and describes sources of evidence relevant to each parameter type. Key parameters are defined as treatment effects, adverse effects, costs, resource use, health state utility values (HSUVs) and baseline risk of events. The recommended minimum requirement for treatment effects is comprehensive searching according to available methodological guidance. For other paramet… Show more

“…Recent research recommends MEDLINE should be searched as a minimum (7). Creating an effective strategy that identifies HSUVs with both high sensitivity and acceptable precision is a recognized search challenge (6)(7)(8). This is due to a range of factors, including the lack of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) specific to HSUVs or utility measures, the number of studies reporting HSUVs which do not explicitly refer to HSUVs or utility measures in the title or abstract, and the number of irrelevant records retrieved when useful yet poorly discriminating terms such as "utility" or "quality of life" are included in the strategy.…”

“…Search filters have played a significant role in the effective and efficient retrieval of other study types such as randomized controlled trials and economic evaluations. The limitations in indexing and abstract description pose a recognized challenge for filter use in identifying HSUVs (6)(7)(8). Given this challenge, it is important that researchers have evidence on how a group of search terms used for this purpose is likely to perform.…”
