Identification of moderator variables by discriminant analysis in a multipredictable group validation model.

Abstract: A multivariate discriminant analysis procedure was used to identify moderator variables in a multipredictable group validation (MPGV) model. Results from MPGV also were compared to those of the univariate simple algebraic and absolute difference techniques. Seventeen variables, determined for 418 undergraduate students (N = 209 in the experimental group; N -209 in the cross-validation group), were investigated as potential moderators of the relationship between the predictor and the criterion (grade point aver… Show more

“…There are many methods used to identify moderators: regression analysis (Saunders, 1955), the fractionating technique (Frederiksen and Melville, 1954), Ghiselli's (1956) D score technique, off-quadrant analysis (Ghiselli, 1963), Dunnette's (1972) modification of the D score method, Hobert and Dunnette's (1967) variation of Ghiselli's (1963) off-quadrant analysis, and the multivariate discriminant analysis technique (Zedeck, 1971). Five of these methods, Saunders (1955), Ghiselli (1956;1963), Hobert and Dunnette (1967), and Dunnette (1972), involve correlating the potential moderator with some measure of the accuracy of prediction such as the squared deviations from the regression line (Saunders, 1955), the absolute deviations from the line of relations (Ghiselli, 1956) or the classification of hit or miss (Ghiselli, 1963).…”
