Objectives: This paper addresses two key issues in the area of flexible robotics. The issues are dynamic modelling and control of flexible link robots. A brief, yet, significant review is provided that addresses these issues. Methods: The various approaches used by researchers for dynamic modelling and control of flexible robots are presented. Besides that, methods used for achieving optimal control are also discussed. Findings: After a review of 153 research papers from the year 1975 to 2021, it has been found that a good dynamic model of flexible manipulator helps in reducing the control and computational efforts. Recent trends in research in the area of flexible manipulators are towards the use of sliding mode control and vision-based control techniques. Novelty: Inclusion of the effect of torsional vibrations besides lateral vibrations on the positional accuracy of flexible manipulators makes the current research work novel.

The middle layer model has been used in recent years to better describe the connection behavior in composite structures. The influencing parameters including low pre-screw and high preload have the main effects on nonlinear behavior of the connection as well as the amplitude of the excitation force applied to the structure. Therefore, in this study, the effects of connection behavior on the general structure in two sections of increasing damping and reducing the stiffness of the structures that lead to non-linear phenomena have been investigated. Due to the fact that in composite structure we are faced to the limitation of increasing screw preload which tend to structural damage, so the investigation on the hybrid connection (metal-composite) behavior is conducted. In this research, using the two-dimensional middle layer theory, the stiffness properties of the connection are modeled by normal stiffness and the connection damping is modeled using the structural damping in the shear direction. Nonlinear frequency response diagrams have been extracted twice for two different excitation forces and then proposed by a high-order multitasking approximation according to the response range of the nonlinear finite element model for stiffness and damping of the connection. The effect of increasing the amplitude of the excitation force and decreasing the preload of the screw on the nonlinear behavior of the component has been extracted. The results show that the limited presented novel component model has been accurately verified on the model obtained from the vibration experimental test and the reduction of nonlinear model updating based on that is represented. The comparison results show good agreement with a maximum of 1.33% error.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the effects of using circular spirals as the longitudinal reinforcing bars on the performance of the concrete beams subjected to four-point bending load.Design/methodology/approachThe effects of using circular spirals as the longitudinal reinforcing bars on the performance of the concrete beams subjected to four-point bending load are investigated in this study. Employing circular spirals as the main longitudinal reinforcement is a novel idea presented in this paper. In this regard, a finite element model of the beam with spiral longitudinal reinforcement was developed. After model verification, several configurations of concrete beams reinforced by longitudinal spirals were simulated under the four-point loading condition.FindingsObtained results showed that using the longitudinal spirals in place of the conventional longitudinal reinforcing bars can improve the bearing capacity of the concrete beam, but at the same time, increases its ductility unacceptably. In other words, the spirals reduce the initial stiffness of the beam significantly. To solve the problem, the authors decided to use the longitudinal spirals as the auxiliary bars added to the main conventional longitudinal bars in the beams. New gained results were satisfactory. By adding the longitudinal spirals to the conventional bars, not only the bearing capacity of the beam increases between 24% and 63%, but also the initial stiffness and ductility of the beam raises between 11%–29% and 3%–57%, respectively, in comparison to the corresponding beam reinforced with conventional longitudinal bars.Originality/valueEmploying circular spirals as the main longitudinal reinforcement is a novel idea presented in this paper.
