Identification of Pathogenic Strains within Serogroups of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and the Presence of Non-Pathogenic Strains Isolated from Animals and the Environment.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The existence of apathogenic strains of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (Yp) has not so far been reported. Recently, the authors characterized new serogroups and a new subgroup in Yp, that is, O9, O10, O12, O13, O14 and O1c, and the pathogenicity of these new strains was of interest. A total of 137 strains of serogroups O1c, O6, O7, O9, O10, O11, O12, O13 and O14 of Yp were investigated for their pathogenicity in vivo and in vitro. Although catalase activity and the inv gene were detected in all strains … Show more

“…Although an estimation of the pathogenicity of groups 1 and 6 awaits confirmation from investigations of more cases of human infections, the pathogenicity of groups 4 and 5 was discussed. The distribution of group 4, which includes NMF serotypes O1b, -5a, -5b, -6, -7, -9, -10, -11, and -12 and which does not have pYV, among wild animals and environments in Japan suggests that the origin of this group is the Far East and that this group is nonpathogenic, thereby supporting the proposal that serotypes O6, -7, -9, -10, -11, and -12 are not lethal for mice (30). Group 5 contained NMF serotype O3 strains originating from patients and pigs and other members of livestock in Western countries (29) and from a patient and pigs in the Far East (44) but never from wild animals anywhere.…”

“…pseudotuberculosis, a Gram-negative gastrointestinal pathogenic bacterium, causes self-limiting gastroenteritis and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Transmission between animals and humans is normally through the ingestion of contaminated food or faecal material (Nagano et al, 1997). Survival in acidic environments is important for infection, but the Y. pseudotuberculosis acid response is not well understood.…”
