Complexity of modern power network and Large disturbance results voltage collapse. So, voltage security analysis is important in power system. Indicators are helpful in voltage stability analysis, as they give information about the state of the system. In this paper a new indicator namely Distribution System Stability Indicator (DSSI) has been formulated using the information of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU).The proposed indicator (DSSI) is tested on standard IEEE 33 bus radial distribution system. The suggested indicator is also applicable to the equivalent two bus system of a multi-bus power system. The proposed indicator is calculated for different contingent conditions at different system load configurations. The result of DSSI is verified with the standard indicator (VSI) which proves applicability of the proposed indicator. The bus voltages of all the buses at base loading and at maximum loading are evaluated for base data and for tripping of most critical line.

Summary Electricity consumption has been increasing worldwide, and the growth is still significant, particularly in developing countries. When power consumption increases, the entire system is at a risk of voltage collapse. Power distribution companies have been using step‐up transformers or on‐load tap changing systems to overcome this crucial challenge. These devices are capable of increasing voltage and consequently promoting static voltage stability margin of the network. To use such equipment, it is essential to determine the optimal location and voltage ratio. This paper analytically investigates the presence of a step‐up transformer in a medium‐voltage radial feeder for improving voltage stability. The paper also introduces an easy‐to‐use coordinate rotation that provides a more tangible graphical representation of static stability of power systems. Furthermore, an open‐source software application, developed by the authors, to calculate voltage stability limit of power systems is introduced in this paper that is publicly available.

This paper presents an effective method for the identification of candidate bus for DSTATCOM placement for the minimization of power losses and improvement of voltage profile in radial distribution system with load modeling. The D-STATCOM is modeled for determination of its size by assuming the voltage magnitude as 1 p.u. at the candidate bus. The validity of the method is tested on the standard IEEE 33-bus radial distribution system by performing load flow analysis after compensating the candidate bus using MATLAB software. The results obtained are compared without and with the D-STATCOM for all load models. The voltage profile and the losses reduction is obtained for IEEE 33 bus test system with the optimal placement of D-STATCOM based on the sensitivity index.
