Identifying frankincense impact by biochemical analysis and histological examination on rats

Abstract: Frankincense (Gum Olibanum), made from resins of Burseraceae family, grows in Somalia, India and Yemen. Many years ago the oldest doctors used this plant for treatment of many diseases. This study identifies frankincense impact by biochemical analysis and histological examination on rats. In this study, forty male Wister Albino rats weighing 70-100 g were maintained in clean cages. “…It is well known that the kidney is the target organ for many plant toxins. Several authors have reported different histopathological alterations in kidney tissues following the administration of certain toxic plants to different animal species [25] [26] [29]. In addition, the results of the present study have shown that F. vulgare induced mild histopatholological changes in lung, spleen and duodenum of mice.…”

“…[ 2 ] This has been extended by cultivation to meet the worldwide demand. [ 3 ] The resin is obtained by making scrapes in the trunk of the various Boswellia species (Burseraceae), and collecting the dried resin gums from the trees later. [ 2 4 ] Good-quality resin is produced only for 3 years, after which the quality of the collected resin decreases significantly; therefore, the tree should be left to rest for some years after the harvesting period.…”

“…BC (before Christ), there were no risk mitigation strategies. A popular narrative could frame three wise men bringing gifts of a heavy metal and toxic essential oil products into the household of a young child, without any consideration of whether it might pose unacceptable risks and change history if it were accidentally consumed 1 . BC (before consumer protection), products routinely contained undeclared toxic ingredients.…”
