Identifying Predictors of Army Marksmanship: A Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor Perspective

Abstract: Marksmanship is a core competency every U.S. Army Soldier must attain in order to achieve combat readiness (James & Dyer, 2011). To enhance overall marksmanship proficiency, the current research aims to develop a model to predict Soldier marksmanship qualification scores based on individual differences. The results of the current study found several psychomotor, cognitive, and affective variables predicted marksmanship qualification scores. These findings bring research a step closer to identifying skill d… Show more

“…It was determined that the existing most common sources of sappers' personal fears sappers have different frequency and intensity of manifestation depending on the prevalence of certain accentuative differences. That is, the sources of personal fears and accentuative differences of sappers are closely related, which has been confirmed in a number of studies (Anglin et al, 2017;Hjeltnes et al, 2015;Yen, 2020).…”

“…Cognitive readiness refers to the mental preparation of military personnel with military KSAs to perform in military operations (Crameri et al, 2021). Situation awareness, memory, transfer, meta-cognition, automaticity, problem-solving, decision-making, mental flexibility, creativity, leadership, and emotion are considered components related to cognitive readiness that needs to be established to deal with the COE involving multi-domain operations for processing information, making quick and accurate decisions in the complex operating environment of military operations (Crameri et al, 2021;Preddy et al, 2019;Anglin et al, 2017). The characteristics of the complex operating environment (COE) are dynamic, complex, and unpredictable require military personnel who are cognitively ready to sustain competence to execute the military mission.…”

“…Mission readiness refers to the degree a Solider or a military unit is capable of accomplishing their assigned mission. Anglin, Novell, Murphy, and Goodwin (2017) have found that WQS have significant correlations with basic marksmanship knowledge, handgun familiarity, initiative, and large animal hunting experience. However, no research has been done to confirm that WQS can indeed be a suitable indication of Soldiers' marksmanship mission readiness (MMR), or the degree to which WQS performance is representative of Soldiers' ability to successfully perform dynamic and complex marksmanship tasks.…”
