Background Telemedicine is increasingly being used to access abortion services. Objective To assess the success rate, safety, and acceptability for women and providers of medical abortion using telemedicine. Search strategy We searched PubMed, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Web of Science up until 10 November 2017. Study criteria We selected studies where telemedicine was used for comprehensive medical abortion services, i.e. assessment/counselling, treatment, and follow up, reporting on success rate (continuing pregnancy, complete abortion, and surgical evacuation), safety (rate of blood transfusion and hospitalisation) or acceptability (satisfaction, dissatisfaction, and recommendation of the service). Data collection and analysis Quantitative outcomes were summarised as a range of median rates. Qualitative data were summarised in a narrative synthesis. Main results Rates relevant to success rate, safety, and acceptability outcomes for women ≤10+0 weeks’ gestation (GW) ranged from 0 to 1.9% for continuing pregnancy, 93.8 to 96.4% for complete abortion, 0.9 to 19.3% for surgical evacuation, 0 to 0.7% for blood transfusion, 0.07 to 2.8% for hospitalisation, 64 to 100% for satisfaction, 0.2 to 2.3% for dissatisfaction, and 90 to 98% for recommendation of the service. Rates in studies also including women >10+0 GW ranged from 1.3 to 2.3% for continuing pregnancy, 8.5 to 20.9% for surgical evacuation, and 90 to 100% for satisfaction. Qualitative studies on acceptability showed no negative impacts for women or providers. Conclusion Based on a synthesis of mainly self‐reported data, medical abortion through telemedicine seems to be highly acceptable to women and providers, success rate and safety outcomes are similar to those reported in literature for in‐person abortion care, and surgical evacuation rates are higher. Background: Abortion has been available without criminal restriction in Canada since 1988, and approximately 33 000 terminations take place in Ontario each year. Objectives: This study aimed to explore women's expressed desire for post-abortion support services, document the priorities expressed by women in seeking post-abortion support, and identify actionable strategies to improve post-abortion support services in Ontario. Methods: Between 2012 and 2014 we conducted in-depth, open-ended interviews with 60 Anglophone women from across Ontario who had recently had an abortion. We aimed to rigorously explore the compounding issues of age and geography on women's abortion experiences. We analyzed our data for content and themes and reported on the findings related to post-abortion support. Results: One third of our participants expressed a desire for post-abortion support, yet few were able to access a timely, affordable, non-directive service. Women were uncertain about how to find services; most contacted a provider recommended by the clinic or searched online. Women were enthusiastic about a talkline format citing anonymity and convenience as the main advantages. Conclusion: Our results suggest that exploring ways to expand post-abortion support services in Ontario is warranted. A talkline format could provide an anonymous, convenient, non-judgmental, and non-directive way to address this unmet need.

“We Have the Law, We Need the Access!:” Activism, Access and the Social Organization of Abortion in New Brunswick

This dissertation explores the role that feminist pro-choice activists have played in resisting and reshaping the social organization of abortion care in New Brunswick. Using political activist ethnography (PAE), my research demonstrates the ways in which activists may help to reveal the social relations organizing abortion access in order to ultimately transform them. Building on PAE and movement-relevant theories, I argue that movement spaces are key sites of knowledge production, and thus offer a useful starting point for research that aims to challenge and transform social relations of ruling.Contemporary research on abortion in Canada has largely centered on the unequal regional distribution of abortion services, the disproportionate impact of access barriers among marginalized women and communities, and the role of provincial governments and health authorities in allocating abortion services in the context of Canadian federalism. My dissertation extends these conversations by offering a case study into the unique access barriers imposed by the provincial government in New Brunswick, as mediated by the province's Medical Services Payment Act. Based on twenty-five in-depth semi-structured interviews, two years of participant observation with Reproductive Justice New Brunswick (RJNB), as well as archival research into the history of abortion regulation in the province, I trace how the closure of the Fredericton Morgentaler Clinic helped spark a grassroots movement to expand abortion access and repeal the province's public funding restrictions for clinic abortions.This dissertation would not have been possible without the support and care of my wonderful partner and husband, Scott Lewin.
