IL1RN and KRT13 Expression in Bladder Cancer: Association with Pathologic Characteristics and Smoking Status

Abstract: Purpose. To validate microarray data on cytokeratin 13 (KRT13) and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN) expression in urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (UCB) and to correlate our findings with pathologic characteristics and tobacco smoking. Methods. UCB tissue samples (n = 109) and control samples (n = 14) were obtained from transurethral resection and radical cystectomy specimens. Immunohistochemical staining of KRT13 and IL1RN was performed and semiquantitative expression scores were assessed… Show more

“…To estimate the in vivo relevance of the IL-1 mediated ECA, we analysed biopsies of bladder cancer patients by IHC and the bladder cancer transcriptome in publicly available data sets. In concordance with one of our previous studies, IHC staining of tumour tissue from UCB patients revealed a significantly weaker IL-1ra expression when compared to healthy tissue samples [51]. Similarly, adverse clinicopathological features correlated with high IL-1β mRNA tissue levels in the UCB transcriptome.…”

“…For IL1RN, its low Fig. 5 The column diagram of the expression levels of the 10 important characteristic DEGs in the TCGA training set (a) and the GSE45725 validation set (b) in the better and poor DFS groups, with white and black columns representing the better and poor DFS sample groups, respectively expression is an early driver of carcinogenesis of urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder [34]. Moreover, genetic polymorphisms of IL1RN are found to be associated with individual susceptibility for breast cancer development in Korean women [35].…”

“…Our study showed that higher expression of FOXJ1 was associated with better DFS in breast cancer, and FOXJ1 may be a good prognostic factor for the prognosis of breast cancer. For IL1RN , its low expression is an early driver of carcinogenesis of urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder [ 34 ]. Moreover, genetic polymorphisms of IL1RN are found to be associated with individual susceptibility for breast cancer development in Korean women [ 35 ].…”

“…A downregulation of IL1RN expression that coincides with the degree of malignancy has been observed in colorectal cancer [17], chronic myeloid leukemia [18], and in oral squamous cell carcinoma [19]. Immunohistochemical staining of UCB tissue samples has yielded similar results, finding significantly reduced IL1RA expression in MIBC samples compared to NMIBC and control samples [20].…”
