Ilececum: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: For gastrointestinal endoscopists, the ileocecum is the finishing line during colonoscopy and it is identified by three endoscopic landmarks: terminal ileum, ileocecal valve, and the appendiceal orifice. Although ileal intubation is recommended during routine screening colonoscopy, it is not required in most cases of screening colonoscopy. Ileal intubation is indicated in certain circumstances such as suspected inflammatory bowel disease and GI bleeding. There is much pathology that can be observed within the … Show more

“…However, our technique can be applied to remove contaminating SM and ILF from endoscopic biopsies (Extended Data Figure 3A-B), for the cases in which this occurs 13,14 . Furthermore, advanced endoscopic visualization methods can identify ILF 20 , which could be assessed for composition and function using a modified version of this method. This would be useful for assessing other patient cohorts, such as IBD patients on distinct treatment regimens.…”

“…We firstly focused on the terminal ileum which is frequently affected by inflammation in the intestine [ 18 ]. We used a distal part of the small intestine; 3-cm length from the terminal ileum in adult mice and a distal 1/3 part between the cecum and pyloric ring in fetal mice at embryonic day 16 (E16) (Fig.…”

“…With increased colon cancer screening, appendiceal and/or cecal lesions involving the appendiceal orifice are becoming more frequently encountered 15 . Surgery, including right hemicolectomy and partial cecectomy, has often been used as the standard therapy for these lesions.…”
