Illegal immigration in the eastern Aegean Sea: a new source of marine litter

Abstract: The maritime area dominates the current increasing wave of illegal immigration to Europe. The Greek islands of the eastern Aegean Sea are the main entrance points of immigrants arriving from the coasts of Turkey. Immigration to the Greek islands is mainly conducted with inflatable boats, which are abandoned upon arrival along the coasts together with other items such as lifejackets, inflatable tubes, and clothing. “…The common occurrence of the barnacles Lepas anserifera and Amphibalanus amphitrite confirms that both species have a welldeveloped ability to attach to artificial materials of different compositions (Katsanevakis and Crocetta, 2014;Shabani et al, 2019;Al Khayat et al, 2021). We also present the first records on stranded litter for the species P. cingulata, U. vestiarium, the foraminiferan Ammonia beccarii and the oyster Magallana bilineata (Table 1).…”

“…4). Musellim Strait is one of the most preferred regions of irregular immigrants who want to migrate through Turkey due to its geographical features such as being sheltered against effective northerly winds in the North Aegean and being close to Lesbos Island (Katsanevakis, 2015). During the study, it was aimed to collect data from the region from Sazlı to Babakale and from the nearby Lesbos coast.…”

“…For example, P. marina has been established in the Mediterranean and the East Atlantic coast for hundreds of years [43]. However, this caprellid species has a cosmopolitan distribution [44] and has been reported from fouling communities including floating plastic debris, aquaculture facilities and numerous harbors around the globe [45][46][47][48], being clearly associated with human activities (e.g., anthropogenic transport). Focusing on the collectors, P. marina was the dominant species, showing a high ability to colonize new artificial substrates.…”
