Image registration guided wavefield tomography for shear wave velocity model building

Abstract: Multicomponent acquisitions offer the opportunity to form elastic migration images and to estimate elastic parameters of the subsurface. Compared with better constrained P-wave velocity inversions, it is more difficult to estimate the S-wave velocity due to strong nonlinearities introduced by converted S-waves. We have developed an iterative S-wave velocity inversion method guided by image registration. Given an accurate P-wave velocity and a simple initial S-wave model, we form P-P and P-S images using elasti… Show more

“…Huthwaite and Simonetti [17] extended HARBUT (the Hybrid Algorithm for Robust Breast Ultrasound Tomography) to generate thickness maps for guided wave tomography, and used the iterative HARBUT to improve the accuracy of reconstructions of defects. Yang et al [18] developed an iterative S-wave velocity inversion method guided by image registration. Rao et al [19] proposed a guided wave tomography method based on full waveform inversion (FWI), which was iteratively applied to discrete the frequency components from low to high frequencies.…”

“…In the thickness maps of guided wave tomography, the iterative hybrid algorithm for robust breast ultrasound tomography (HARBUT) was used to improve the accuracy of reconstructions of defects [28]. An iterative S-wave velocity inversion method guided by image registration was developed by Yang [29]. A guided wave tomography method based on full waveform inversion (FWI) was considered to discretize the frequency components from low to high frequencies [30].…”

“…Unfortunately, the current traveltime inversion method in acoustic media is hard to straightforwardly implement in elastic case. Even using the reflection tomography, we need the a priori information of important horizons and employ the particular P or S events to constrain the inversion Broto et al (2003); Du et al (2012); Yang et al (2015).…”
