Imaging before and after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation

Abstract: Catheter ablation of arrhythmogenic triggers has been validated for the treatment of atrial fibrillation that is refractory to anti-arrhythmic medication. Imaging plays an important role in guiding the procedure as well as in planning and follow-up. The goal of pre-procedural imaging is to obtain a detailed anatomical description of the pulmonary veins, to eliminate a thrombus of the left atrium and to define the prognostic factors. MDCT angiography effectively and simply meets nearly all of these needs. Thus,… Show more

“…Ebert et al [24] described extracardiac abnormalities in 1.5% of CT/CMR performed in the context of preprocedural screening for AF catheter ablation. Preprocedural imaging allows us to define prognostic factors; in particular, the left atrium volume, in addition to its importance as an exclusion criterion, is also a reliable risk factor for recurrence [25].…”

“…Preprocedural imaging in such patients is helpful for delineating the PV anatomy; identifying potential technical difficulties; and, most importantly, selection of therapy, ie, RF ablation versus CBA. 17 To the best of our knowledge, our case is the first to demonstrate that AF CBA can be successfully performed in patients with prior total pneumonectomy.…”

“…Because of the high spatial resolution of the technique and the fast acquisition of the images, the study of the LA by MDCT focuses mainly on the anatomical assessment of the atrium [ 50 ]. Evaluation of the PVs prior to the performance of PV ablation in AF and the study of the LAA prior to its closure are two of the main indications of the technique ( Figure 8 ) [ 51 , 52 ].…”
