Imaging in living cells using νB–H Raman spectroscopy: monitoring COSAN uptake

Abstract: The boron-rich cobaltabisdicarbollide (COSAN) and its 8,8'-I2 derivative (I2-COSAN), both of purely inorganic nature, are shown to accumulate within living cells, where they can be detected using νB-H Raman microspectroscopy. This demonstrates an alternative method for cell labelling and detection.

“…These species include efficient extraction agents for lanthanides and actinides [18], biologically active species [13e15] and probes [19], dendrimeric structures and their precursors [17,20e22], additives to polymers and membranes and selective electrodes [23e25], etc. The use of the reagents based on cleavable of cyclic ether moieties [26] results in lengthy linear connections, typically containing a chain of 6 atoms, between the cage and an organic functionality.…”

“…Analytical techniques based on Raman spectroscopy have already found application in various fields, like reaction monitoring, biosensing or metalloenzyme characterisation . A recent example also involves carboranes in biological application; a drawback might only be the rather high concentrations of some bioactive substances (100 m m ) which are needed when applied on some cell lines …”
