Immediate and short‐term outcomes after percutaneous atrial septal defect closure using the new nit‐occlud ASD‐R device

Abstract: We report the first worldwide clinical experience using the NOASD-R device for ASD-OS closure. The procedure was feasible, with a high rate of successful implantations, and safe. High ASD-OS closure rates and no complications were encountered during short-term follow-up. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

“…Sufficient data on this unique device are lacking. As well as we know there is only one published report that evaluates the performance of the device prospectively [9]. To the best our knowledge, this is the second study that evaluates the feasibility, safety and efficacy of the NOASD-R in ASD closure.…”

“…The appropriate-sized long sheath was placed into the LUPV in order to prevent the opening of the device within the left atrial appendage, as described [9]. If standard LUPV deployment technique was unsuccessful as the device not aligned perpendicularly to the septum and/or embolized into the right atrium, right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV) approach was used.…”

“…ASD is one of the most common congenital heart diseases, but it can be repaired by interventional treatment, which has the advantages of limited trauma, no scarring, no effects on appearance or recovery, relative safety, and yet can achieve the same results as more traditional surgical treatments [10]. With accumulating experience performing this treatment, along with improvements in the operation technique, even defects with small margins or rims can be successfully repaired using interventional treatment.…”

“…Of 74 ASD patients (mean age 17.2 years [range 2-72]) with a mean device size of 18.9 mm (range 10-30), 73 patients had a successful closure [70]. The one failure was a patient in which device-induced complete heart block was observed, after which the device was removed.…”
