Immune function of successfully treated lymphoma patients.

Abstract: A B S T R A C T Immunologic function was evaluated in 12 patients with Hodgkin's disease and 5 patients with lymphocytic lymphoma who had been successfully treated with either chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both of these modalities 3-42 mo previously. Only two of the patients were found to have total anergy to a battery of six recall skin test antigens and all were responsive to skin testing with phytohemagglutinin. However, 10 of 16 patients were unable to develop delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity to ei… Show more

“…3). This observation con firms previous reports from other investigators [10][11][12][13]. In vitro cytokine production, including IL-2, GM-CSF, y-IFN, and the release of sCD23 were also diminished in HD pa tients, suggesting a decreased Type 1 T cell function in these patients.…”

“…Depressed LP responses in cancer patients have been described in many studies (Ducos et al, 1970;Rees et al, 1975;Han and Takita, 1972;Catalona et al, 1973;Dean et al, l977,1978Dean et al, l977, ,1979aLiebler et al, 1977;Dalbrow et al, 1977;Hersh and Oppenheim, 1965;Cohnen et al, 1973;Graze et al, 1976;Faquet, 1975;MelIstedt and Holm, 1973;King et al, 1976;Matchett et al, 1973;Garrloch et al, 1970;McKhann et al, 1975;Golub et al, 1974;Whittaker et al, 1971;Weese et al, 1977). However, LP responsiveness did not always correlate well with stage of disease and therefore appeared to be independent of extent of tumor burden (Bornes et al, 1975).…”

“…Some facets of the immunodeficiency seem to be associated with active disease. Thus, the lymphocyte stimulation by recall antigen in vitro and in vivo, and to some extent the spontaneous lymphocyte DNA synthesis, may eventually normalize (Sokal & Primikirios, 1961;King et al, 1976;Gobbi et al, 1977;Bjorkholm et al, 1977bBjorkholm et al, , c, 1981. Lymphocyte inhibitory serum factors which disappear after successful treatment may contribute to the deficiency during active disease (Holm et al, 1979a, b).…”
