The adult female X. hellerii is immunologically competent (Hogarth, 1968), and the foetus is antigenically mature before birth and capable of eliciting an immune response if transplanted ectopically (Hogarth, 1972). It is possible that the embryo survives gestation without provoking rejection as an allograft because the ovary, within which gestation occurs, is a favourable site for allograft survival.…”
