Immunologic alterations in bronchogenic cancer.Sequential Study

Abstract: A sequential study of patients with cancer of the lung reveals that there is a marked alteration in delayed hypersensitivity as manifested by Dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) sensitization and purified protein derivative (PPD) reactions, when compared to age‐matched controls. Short survival times (diagnosis to death) are associated with negative DNCB tests. Skin reactivity does not necessarily change as patients approach death, however. Circulating lymphocytes decrease significantly in number during the months appr… Show more

“…In evaluating the immunological status of cancer patients, moderate immunosuppression was noted in the presence of relatively confined tumors, and significant impairment of the immune system was found in the advanced stages of cancer [98][99][100][101][102][103]. Although the exact nature of immunodeficiency in these patients is unclear, and the potential involvement of the DC system as a basis for the immunosuppression is controversial, numerous evidence has been presented recently suggesting that DC are deficient and not fully functional in the tumor microenvironment (Table 2).…”

“…to dilute solutions containing insulin greatly reduces insulin adsorption. 5 We have used gelatin solutions to mimic the action of serum in insulin radioimmunoassay,8 and in later assays substitution of a commercial 3-5% polygeline solution (polymer of degraded gelatin; Haemaccel, Hoechst-Behringwerke) proved equally effective. It seemed likely that this medium, which is normally used as a plasma substitute, would also be suitable as an insulin carrier solution.s…”
