“…The capacity of helminths to modulate host immune responses to unrelated antigens is well documented (1). High dose immunization with adult Ascaris suum worm antigen (Asc) induces a marked production of IL-4 and IL-10 by inguinal and periaortical lymph node (LN) cells of DBA/2 mice (2).…”

“…Ascaris suum, like many other helminths, can modulate the host's immune response, leading to enhancement or suppression of antibody production and/or cell-mediated immunity to unrelated antigens [1]. Comparative studies of populations with varying degrees of helminthic infection have indicated that these parasites cause a non-specific polyclonal stimulation of IgE synthesis, which can enhance allergic reactivity [2,3] or, when it is excessive, can be suppressive [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Helminth infections in man and several animal species have been associated with a large production of IgE anti bodies [1] and with the modulation of the immune respon siveness of these hosts [2], Thus, Trichinella spiralis, Ascaris suum, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Nematospiroides dubius and diverse filariae can depress or enhance the hetero logous humoral or cell-mediated immunities and affect macrophage activity or the response to other invaders [2], Using the N. brasiliensis infection to study the mechanisms of IgE regulation by helminths, Ishizaka [3] identified two IgE-binding factors which potentiating or suppressive ac tivity on the IgE antibody production depends on two other glycosylation-controlling lymphokines. In relation to A. suum, it was shown that this nematode potentiates the IgE response in different species [4][5][6], although at tempts made in the mouse model were unsuccessful [7], The worm extracts in various stages of purification have been also widely used as immunizing antigen in studies on IgE antibody formation [8][9][10][11][12].…”
