Immunotherapy with Dialyzable Leukocyte Extracts Containing Transfer Factor

Abstract: Dialyzable leukocyte extracts (DLE) are complexes consisting of a large number of low molecular weight substances. These extracts possess immunomodulatory properties, which are mainly attributed to small peptides with molecular weight of 3.5-6.0 kDa called "transfer factor." This chapter reviews the nature and immunological characteristics of DLE containing transfer factor (TF), their mechanism of action and the possible uses as immunomodulators in human and veterinary medicine. A main advantage of TF-preparat… Show more

“…Several patented processes for DLE production are available, including a human derived DLE [17]. Administration of DLE has been reported as an effective adjuvant in the treatment of infections, allergies, cancer, and immunodeficiencies [18]. DLE ability to modulate immune responses has been defined in several reviews as due to immune activator and suppressor properties.…”

“…Therefore, TF gives attractive option to complement chemotherapy, which might strengthen immune system after disturbances following chemotherapy side effects [3,48,49]. Main TF benefit as immunotherapeutic agents is possibility to stimulate rapid immune reaction against pathogen within 24 hours and reducetime for patient immune response to 9-13 days [50]. Combination of results from different TF studies in one and extracting treatment outcomes of cancer with chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders, allergies also immunodefficiencies and infection diseases can be used by clinicians for decision-making and improving patient's life quality.…”

“…This group includes substances produced by immune system cells, also known as dialysable leukocyte extracts (DLE). DLE are a diverse mixture of low-molecular weight compounds derived from blood or lymphoid tissue with immunomodulatory properties (153). Several reports have shown that DLE derived from human blood or lymphoid tissue from different animals (crocodile, porcine or bovine) can regulate numerous molecular targets, thereby facilitating immunomodulatory effects in conditions such as autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, asthma, bacterial infections and certain types of cancer (153)(154)(155)(156).…”
