Impact Assessment of Offshore Pile Driving Noise on Red Sea Marine Mammals

Abstract: Abstract-Red Sea is one of the most important repositories of the marine biodiversity in the world. Red Sea oil and gas reserves are estimated to be around 100 billion barrel of oil equivalent necistate the use of offshore structure to extract it. Most of offshore drilling rigs and production platforms are found on group of large diameter piles which are driving into sea bed producing high amount of underwater noise. Underwater noise emitted during pile construction can mask biologically relevant signals for m… Show more

“…In Egypt, which is a very close country to Palestine, many recent studies relating to cetaceans were reviewed (Notarbartolo et al 2017; Dawoud et al, 2016;Farrag et al, 2019;Abo-Taleb, 2020;and Mahdy et al, 2021). In Turkey, Iran, Lebanon and Syria, many cetaceans were studied for their biology, ecology and stranding (Öztürk and Öztürk, 1998;Khalaf et al, 2003;Saad, 2004;Öztürk et al, 2011 andDede et al, 2012).…”

“…Activities such as harbour construction, marine piling for renewables development, Oil & Gas exploration and production, defence, research and many others now regular require noise assessment as part of their Environmental Impact Assessment One example is marine piling; this process releases high levels of acoustic energy into the seabed and water surrounding it (Duncan et al 2010). This acoustic energy has the potential to cause injury, or even death, to marine mammals and fish (Boyd et al 2008) (Dawoud et al 2016). This has led to legislation being developed and enforced by government.…”
