Impact of Different Barley-Based Cropping Systems on Soil Physicochemical Properties and Barley Growth under Conventional and Conservation Tillage Systems

Abstract: This two-year study observed the influence of various barley-based cropping systems on soil physicochemical properties, allometric traits and biomass production of barley sown under different tillage systems. Barley was cultivated in different cropping systems (CS), i.e., fallow-barley (fallow-B), maize-barley (maize-B), cotton-barley (cotton-B), mungbean-barley (mungbean-B) and sorghum-barley (sorghum-B) under zero tillage (ZT), minimum tillage (MT), strip tillage (ST), conventional tillage (CT) and bed-sowin… Show more

“…It is estimated that weeds cause 20-30% yield losses in major crops of Pakistan [6]. Weeds cause 35-69% yield losses in mungbean [7], 15-40% in cotton [8], 58-85% in soybean [9] and up to 40% in most of the field crops [10][11][12].…”

“…Herbicides are the most effective and quickest weed management option; however, they reduce food quality and impose many adverse effects on environment, animal and human health [13,14]. Furthermore, extensive use herbicides with same mode of action can result in the evolution of herbicide resistance [11,12]. Herbicide resistance has been confirmed in 304 weed biotypes in 95 crops from 71 countries, affecting efficiency of herbicides with 21 modes of action [15].…”

“…Different crop rotations resulted in different weed densities and biomass. The differences in crop rotations can be owed to the residual effects on the following crop [8,60,61]. Several earlier studies have reported that adapting different crop rotations help in lowering density of a particular weed or overall weed density.…”

“…In Pakistan, after rice-wheat and maize, barley is the fourth most important cereal crops (Naeem et al 2021). Only the inedible outer shell of hulled barley has been removed by minimal processing, leaving the bran and germ intact.…”
