Impact of peripheral fragmentation on the steam gasification of an isolated wood charcoal particle in a diffusion-controlled regime

Abstract: This study focuses on the effect of peripheral fragmentation during gasification of an isolated wood charcoal particle in the regime of diffusional limitations. In fact, all the models available in the literature fail to reproduce the specific changes in biomass charcoals for which conversion increases quasi linearly versus time, whatever the particle size. We assumed this discrepancy is partly due to the fragmentation phenomenon, i.e. the detachment of fragments from the surface of the particle, which is not … Show more

“…In other studies on the steam gasification of biochars (Wu et al, 2009;Ahmed and Gupta, 2010;Mermoud et al, 2006a;Yip et al, 2010;Golfier et al, 2009) pore surface area and reactivity of chars increased with conversion, while an opposite trend was observed for the steam gasification of coal chars (Wu et al, 2006;Liliedahl and Sjostrom, 1997;Xu et al, 2011).…”

“…In other words, internal diffusion resistance can be reduced after extraction. 25 Therefore, increasing the extraction yield can effectively improve the gasification reactivity of the residue. The mixed solvent of scCO 2 and NMP had a good extractability for hydroxyl-rich substances, such as alcohol, ester, ether, phenols, and ketones, and oxygen, sulfur, and other heteroatom-containing compounds.…”

“…Compared with the raw coals, the reaction gas diffuses more easily into the internal pore of the extracted residues. In other words, internal diffusion resistance can be reduced after extraction . Therefore, increasing the extraction yield can effectively improve the gasification reactivity of the residue.…”

“…The purpose here is only to estimate external mass transfer for the boundary conditions. We are aware that advanced models (Golfier et al, 2009;Tilghman and Mitchell, 2013) took into account the evolution of particle diameter (e.g. for fragmentation, etc.)…”
