Impact of the etiology and Vitamin D receptor TaqI rs731236 gene polymorphism on the severity of acute pancreatitis

Abstract: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory illness of the pancreatic exocrine parenchyma. It varies in severity from a mild self-limiting type of acute interstitial pancreatitis to a more serious and rapidly lethal form of acute necrotizing pancreatitis. It may extend to the peripancreatic tissues and is usually associated with a systemic inflammatory response that could result in multi-organ failure if not treated properly. 1 The most common reasons for AP are biliary and alcoholic. Biliary etiology is diagno… Show more

“…There are studies on the relationship between VDR polymorphisms and the risk of AP. As vitamin D acts through VDR, impairment or reduced functions due to VDR gene polymorphisms are associated with the severity of AP [ 66 , 67 ]. This finding highlights the protective effect of VD/VDR signaling against AP.…”

“…In recent years, there are more and more studies on the relationship between VDR polymorphism and the risk of AP, but the results of these studies are not consistent. [ 10 , 11 ] In this study, we performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between different genetic variants of VDR gene and AP, and to evaluate the association of BsmI, ApaI, TaqI, and FokI polymorphisms within different ethnic subgroups. The results were pooled together to obtain reliable conclusions.…”
