Impacts Evaluation of DoS Attacks Over IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol

Abstract: The Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) is one of the main protocols in the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) suite. It provides many basic functions for the normal operations of IPv6 in a Local Area Network (LAN), such as address auto-configuration and address resolution. However, NDP has several vulnerabilities that can be used by malicious nodes to launch attacks, because NDP messages are easily spoofed. Surrounding this problem many solutions have been proposed for securing NDP but these solutions either pr… Show more

“…IPv6 is widely used in IoT based networks which unlike IPv4 networks use the Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) for address resolution. Studies [57,58] suggest that NDP is vulnerable to many attacks (e.g., spoofing, DDoS etc.) and future research is needed in this direction.…”

“…QoS technology can prevent any disruption in the network performance. Although QoS can solve bottleneck traffic, for congestion that happens all of a sudden, A.S. Ahmed et al stated that in the case of sudden congestion, a misconfiguration setting for the queuing discipline can enable attacks, such as denial-of-service and worm [10]. This issue can be addressed using a suitable QoS mechanism.…”
