Impacts of excessive nutrients load in aquatic ecosystem

Abstract: The mechanisms of water eutrophication are not fully understood, but excessive nutrient loading into surface water system is considered to be one of the major factors. This paper reviews nutrient inputs to surface water; the role of nutrients in the eutrophication of surface water; the response of biota to nutrient enrichment; monitoring of changes due to eutrophication and the management. The major influencing factors on water eutrophication include nutrient enrichment, hydrodynamics, environmental factors su… Show more

“…A relatively dense monitoring network including precipitation, GW and SW level was established in the area regularly surveyed by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. Several studies were dealing with various aspects of SW and GW in this area, such as the quality and quantity of water resources (Červeňanská et al, 2021;Kováčová, 2022;Schügerl, 2019;Schügerl et al, 2021); riverbed silting processes (Dulovičová, 2019); interaction of the canals with the aquifer (Baroková et al, 2017(Baroková et al, , 2020Dušek and Velísková, 2017;Okhravi et al, 2022b) and more.…”

“…The siltation rate rose to 65 Mm 3 year -1 in 2017 which represents about 0.75% of the annual loss of dam capacity (Remini, 2017). In addition, the water erosion and sediment transport represent the first factor that reduces the fertility of agricultural land (Xiong et al, 2024), by leaching nitrogen that concentrates in surface water and leads to its pollution (Siman and Velisková, 2020, Kováčová, 2022, Kováčová, 2023. The sediment transported in streams is usually estimated at the gauging station using in situ measurements of suspended sediment concentration (Achite and Ouillon, 2007).…”

“…al., 1999;Zolezzi et. al., 2009;Przybyłek et al, 2017;Monegaglia andTubino, 2019, Kováčová, 2020;2022). The bed sediments, their thickness and structure significantly influence the mutual interaction between surface water in the channels of the channel network and the surrounding groundwater in the whole ŽO area (Fendeková et al, 1998;Krčmář, 2003;Dulovičová et al, 2013;Dušek and Velísková, 2014;Červeňanská et al, 2021).…”
