Impaired auditory evoked potentials and oscillations in frontal and auditory cortex of a schizophrenia mouse model

Abstract: The tested mouse model of schizophrenia showed impaired electrophysiological responses to auditory steady state stimulation, suggesting that it could be useful for preclinical studies of schizophrenia".

“…ASSRs are electrophysiological responses of neural circuits to periodic auditory stimuli and are commonly measured by EEG recordings. Alterations in ASSR phase locking and power in the gamma range (30–80Hz) have been observed in patients with multiple brain disorders 31,43 . To measure ASSRs, we applied five different randomly ordered frequencies with a pulse width of 1 millisecond (Fig 5).…”

“…P56 mice were used for auditory steady‐state response (ASSR) recording. The detailed procedures were described previously 31 . In brief, three microscrews were implanted on the skull above the right frontal lobe (2mm anteroposterior and 1mm medolateral to bregma) for the frontal EEG and above the left and right cerebellum for ground and reference electrodes in anesthetized mice (ketamine/xylazine cocktail (intraperitoneal injection), 120 and 6mg/kg, respectively).…”

“…LSSRs have been widely used for studying auditory function in the healthy and diseased brain43444546474849, and they have been interpreted as an indication of the neural tissue being capable to temporally track sensory information flows45475051. Yet, at present, the neural generators that contribute to LSSRs remain poorly understood.…”

“…In recent years, many new technologies have been developed for the dissection of neural circuits and most of them can be exclusively applied to mouse. For example, GBO studies of psychiatric disease models enable us to associate the functional roles of neuronal oscillations with the expression of behavioural symptoms 38 39 40 . Even though the functional relationship with high-order perceptual processing has been relatively well documented in the human brain, the document on the GBO representation for perceptual binding is lacking on mice.…”
