Impaired renal function is associated with recurrence after cryoballoon catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: A potential effect of non-pulmonary vein foci

Abstract: Low eGFR at baseline was an independent predictor of recurrence after cryoballoon ablation for paroxysmal AF. The presence of non-PV ectopic beats was significantly increased in patients with impaired renal function, which might be associated with a poor outcome.

“…However, we assume low success rates in patients with large LA diameters and thus we usually do not schedule patients with LA diameters > 55 mm for CB PVI. Reduced kidney function was recently detected as a predictor for AF recurrence [20], but was not significant in our cohort.…”

“… 113 In a study of CKD patients undergoing cryoballoon ablation, patients with CKD G3 had significantly higher rates of AF recurrence compared with those with CKD G1 and G2. 114 No cases of contrast-induced nephropathy were reported. In general, sinus rhythm maintenance via ablation is associated with improved eGFR, while ablation failure is associated with eGFR decline.…”
