Implementation and first results of the KM3NeT real-time core-collapse supernova neutrino search

Abstract: The KM3NeT research infrastructure is unconstruction in the Mediterranean Sea. KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multi-purpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primarily aimed at GeV–PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multi-photomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This… Show more

“…Several neutrino detectors have searched for nearby CC-SNe in the last decades, e.g. water Cherenkov detectors (Ahrens et al 2002;Ikeda et al 2007;Abbasi et al 2011;Aiello et al 2022), scintillator detectors (Ambrosio et al 2004;Novoseltsev et al 2020;Agafonova et al 2015;Aharmim et al 2011;Rumleskie & Virtue 2020;Abe et al 2022;Acero et al 2021), lead-based detectors (Rosso 2021), as well as liquid noble gas neutrino (Abi et al 2021) and dark matter detectors (Lang et al 2016).…”

“…The reference values have been computed from refined simulations based on the work done in [13,21], assuming a quasi-thermal emission of electron anti-neutrinos: µ sig,fulldet (E 0 , D L,0 ) = 132.5, D L,0 = 10 kpc, Φ 0 = 8.2 × 10 10 cm −2 , and E 0 = 3 × 10 53 erg.…”

“…In order to remove occasional anomalies such as sparking PMTs, which may result in multiple coincidences happening in a single DOM during 100 ms, a quality score is computed in association with every coincidence level. The quality score, as described in [21], checks the consistency between the number of coincidences and the number of DOMs detecting at least one coincidence. A low score would indicate that one or several DOMs are producing an anomalous number of coincidences, which is not compatible with the expected background or signal.…”
