The traffic situation at an urban intersection is complicated, due to the numerous internal conflicts and all kinds of traffic accidents. With the objective of improving road safety, the automotive industry is moving toward intelligent vehicles. The major challenges are accurately perceiving the road traffic environment, detecting the potential traffic conflicts, and proposing the alternative driving strategies. This paper summarizes the existing researches on traffic conflicts from the perspective of intelligent vehicles. The intelligent vehicles can perceive the surrounding environment, extract road condition information, and detect obstacles for avoiding collisions or mitigating accidents. It expounds that the perception technology of intelligent vehicles can be divided into three main categories, namely, the perception technology, the communication technology, and the fusion of perception-communication technology. At the same time, the existing technical problems are analyzed. Finally, future development trends in this field are discussed. Thousands of fatalities among pedestrians are caused every year by traffic accidents. Vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communication promises to prevent accidents by enabling collision avoidance application. To develop and test a V2P communications system, accurate knowledge of the propagation channel is essential. However, only limited analysis of V2P channel have been reported in the literature. To fill this gap, the German Aerospace Center conducted an extensive channel sounding measurements campaign in a controlled environment. The measurements were performed at 5.2 GHz with a bandwidth of 120 MHz. In parallel to the channel sounding measurements, performance measurements were carried out using ITS-G5 system at 5.9 GHz and with a bandwidth of 10 MHz. This paper describes the setup and the scenarios for the two measurements. First results on channel evaluation in different scenarios as well as path loss models are presented.

To support a massive number of connected cars, a novel channel access scheme for next-generation vehicle-to-anything (V2X) systems is proposed in this paper. In the design of the proposed scheme, two essential aspects are carefully considered: backward compatibility and massive V2X support. Since IEEE 802.11p-based V2X networks are already being deployed and used for intelligent transport systems, next-generation V2X shall be designed considering IEEE 802.11p-based V2X networks to provide backward compatibility. Since all future cars are expected to be equipped with a V2X communication device, a dense V2X communication scenario will be common and massive V2X communication support will be required. In the proposed scheme, IEEE 802.11-based extension is employed to provide backward compatibility and the emerging IEEE 802.11ax standard-based orthogonal frequency-division multiple access is adopted and extended to provide massive V2X support. The proposed scheme is further extended with a dedicated V2X channel and a scheduled V2X channel access to ensure high capacity and low latency to meet the requirements of the future V2X communication systems. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme thoroughly and rigorously, the proposed scheme is mathematically analyzed using a Markov model and extensive simulations are performed. In the dense V2X communication networks of the future, the proposed V2X communication scheme will provide high performance and reliability.
