This paper represents a comparative study among different types of existing single phase AC to DC step down converter. Their performances and outputs have been analyzed depending on their equations. Different parameters such as voltage gain, harmonic contents in input current, parameters of changing output voltage are compared among three different existing single phase AC to DC converters. This research also highlights the advantages and drawbacks of these converters. Simulations of the converters are performed using MATLAB/SIMULINK and PSIM.

ABSTRACT:Voltage fed single stage converters suffer from two main drawbacks: The efficiency is affected due to the reduced values of maximum DC link capacitor voltage and the power factor is not close to unity. To overcome these drawbacks, a boost type -input current shaping converter, integrated with diode clamped topology is used. Since this converter is a multilevel converter, it can be operated with high DC bus voltage. The power factor is also maintained close to unity. This converter is made to operate with fuzzy logic controller to regulate the output voltage. The fuzzy logic controller is designed and the performance of the ac-dc converter is tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK based closed loop simulation.

This study extends the usage of minimum separable switching configuration (MISSCO) in generating circuit-oriented average model to more complex converter structures, which contain more than one switching cell, for example, single-stage AC/ DC converters, in systematic and efficient manner. The model is capable of both large and AC small signal analyses with high accuracy. Also, the model gives electrical information of input and output ports as well as the intermediate bus voltage. Unlike the state-space averaging technique, the model is fully compatible with general-purpose circuit simulators such as SPICE. This greatly facilitates the analysis and design of the converters. In this study, a generalised MISSCO model for non-isolated AC/ DC converters is presented and applied to a recently reported AC/DC converter as an example. Bode plots of transfer functions are also given for designing the feedback controller. Both its steady-state and frequency performances will be verified by simulation, experimental results and compared with state-space averaging counterpart.
