Implementing Reduced-Risk Integrated Pest Management in Fresh-Market Cabbage: Influence of Sampling Parameters, and Validation of Binomial Sequential Sampling Plans for the Cabbage Looper (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: Populations of cabbage looper, Trichoplusiani (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were sampled in experimental plots and commercial fields of cabbage (Brasicca spp.) in Minnesota during 1998-1999 as part of a larger effort to implement an integrated pest management program. Using a resampling approach and the Wald's sequential probability ratio test, sampling plans with different sampling parameters were evaluated using independent presence/absence and enumerative data. Evaluations and comparisons of the different sampl… Show more

“…For each threshold at least two different upper and lower boundaries were tested that represented the proportion of plants infested with S. albicosta egg masses (Jones 1994). For the 4% threshold, three different ranges of variation were simulated (Burkness and Hutchison 2009). Two ranges of variation were similar and symmetric in lower and upper bounds (0.01Ð 0.07 and 0.02Ð 0.06).…”

“…xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) and Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (ERLANDSON et al, 2007;BURKNESS;HUTCHISON, 2009). In Brazil this insect has provoked enormous losses especially among leafy vegetables, making them unmarketable due to depreciation incurred from holes made by feeding caterpillars (CARVALHO et al, 2012).…”
