Implications of climate change mitigation for sustainable development

Abstract: Evaluating the trade-offs between the risks related to climate change, climate change mitigation as well as co-benefits requires an integrated scenarios approach to sustainable development. We outline a conceptual multi-objective framework to assess climate policies that takes into account climate impacts, mitigation costs, water and food availability, technological risks of nuclear energy and carbon capture and sequestration as well as co-benefits of reducing local air pollution and increasing energy security… Show more

“…Our results highlight the importance of synergies and trade-offs that exist between climate and non-climate sustainability dimensions. Given the inherent requirement for value judgments when it comes to weighing the different dimensions against each other, our results reinforce the call for an as broad as possible public deliberation on the exact mix of policies to take within each country (Jakob and Steckel 2016).…”

“…This implies that a systematic assessment framework of the impacts of climate policies on multiple SDGs is necessary. Studies by von Stechow et al [17], Jakob et al [21] and Iyer et al [22] are examples of assessments of climate policies in multiple sectors closely related to global SDGs.…”

“…Nowadays, the water scarcity scenarios (Jakob and Steckel 2016) and the effects of climate change on water resources (Oki and Kanae 2006) drive the development of hydraulic tools able to correctly simulate Water Distribution Networks (WDNs). It can be argued that these are mandatory steps in order to manage and prevent urban water crisis as recently recognized by the European Environmental Agency and underlined by the Water Framework Directive (Conte et al 2012).…”
