Implications of soil pollution with heavy metals for public health

Abstract: Soil of military grounds is often polluted with heavy metals. Their concentrations may be dosens of times higher in polluted regions. The affected soils are permeable, so the pollutions can get into water and spread to the environment. Into human and animal organisms they can get with food and water. Heavy metals are very dangerous for people's health, and we must know their accumulation places, intensity of scatter and integral risk for health. The purpose of this work was to establish links between zones pol… Show more

“…High concentration of heavy metals on soil surface has an adverse effect on the microorganisms present in the soil as well as human beings. The illness rate of adults and teenagers as a result of diseases caused by heavy metals was found to be 1.4 -4.5 times and that of children under the age of 14 years was found to be 1.5 -3.9 times higher in areas contaminated with heavy metals [12,13]. Therefore similar assumptions can be made regarding the accumulation of heavy metals in bottom sediments and water bodies.…”

“…Results of studies of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Ca) in contaminated areas of Lithuania showed that morbidity of adults and adolescent is 1.4-1.5 times higher and morbidity of children younger than 14 years 1.5-3.9 times higher than average morbidity of children with the same disease in uncontaminated regions of Lithuania (Juozulynas et al, 2008). In cities where the architecture is dominated by apartment buildings children most of their free time spend playing in outdoor playgrounds.…”

“…(Vullo, 2003). Por lo tanto, la biodisponibilidad de los metales pesados representa un riesgo latente a la salud (Juozulynas et al, 2008;Yang et al, 2016), pudiendo afectar al sistema digestivo, nervioso e incluso se les relaciona con el cáncer, siendo los niños el grupo de edad más vulnerable a sus efectos (Benselhoub et al, 2015;Latif et al, 2014).…”
