Importance of interim restorations in the molar region

Abstract: Interim restoration protects abutment teeth and periodontal tissues until prosthetic treatment ends with the fabrication of a definitive prosthesis, restores and maintains the functions and morphology of the stomatognathic system, and preserves the occlusal contact relationship. Temporary prostheses are used for a short time, to confirm the diagnosis and treatment plan. However, because interim restorations are used only briefly, their importance in ensuring the success of definitive prostheses is often overlo… Show more

“…As the resin composite endocrown should be manufactured by CAD/CAM or by layering technique, more time and effort will be applied in its manufacturing in comparison with the other two provisional materials (acrylic and bis-acrylic). However, according to the literature [41], an interim restoration, even for a brief period, will assist the clinician in evaluating the treatment plan and improving the prognostic accuracy of prosthetic treatment. The initial investment will be more than repaid in time saved for later procedures, adjustments, and remakes.…”

“…The placement of interim restorations, which are considered intermediate treatments, becomes critical in cases of complete restorations, where several teeth are involved [2,3]. In the cases mentioned, these provisional restorations can be used for relatively long periods of time, from 6 to 12 weeks or even longer, ensuring the maintenance of the health of the remaining tissues, monitoring their stability, and making the necessary adjustments possible [4,5].…”

“…In conventional indirect restoration, the prepared cavity should be temporized prior to the final restoration setting in order to provide positional stability, adequate occlusion and proper oral hygiene 7) . An adequate removal of temporary sealing material from the prepared cavity is important in order to acquire good bonding performance of final restoration.…”
