Improved comfort in lower limb lengthening with the intramedullary skeletal kinetic distractor

Abstract: From these preliminary results we conclude that the comfort of limb lengthening with the ISKD is increased by the elimination of fixator-associated complications and by the simple distraction mechanism, which is well tolerated by the patients. Further advantages of the ISKD are early full weight bearing and excellent limb function.

“…Once the desired length has been achieved, the IM nail is stabilized with distal locking screws and the frame is removed. The locked nail provides rotational and axial stability while protecting the regenerate bone [6]. With earlier removal of the external fixator, the complication rates related to the pins, including pin tract infections and joint stiffness, are substantially diminished [13].…”

“…With a consolidation index of 35.2 days/cm, the Albizzia 1 nail appears faster [14]. The consolidation index in the ISKD 1 ranged from 21 to 29 days/cm [21,27]. In our group with the FITBONE 1 TAA, the consolidation index was 26 days/cm.…”

“…Callus distraction by intramedullary lengthening has become an alternative treatment method for limb lengthening during the last 5 years [4,6,9,14,19,21,27,37]. Few data have been published concerning the FITBONE 1 TAA for intramedullary leg lengthening [4,6,37].…”

“…Iobst and Dahl (2007) reported promising results with this technique with no infections associated with the method. Lengthening nails with no use of an external distraction device show promising results in case reports, but is associated with hardware failures and unsatisfactory achievements of longer lengthenings (Baumgart 2008, Hankemeier et al 2004, Paley 2007.…”
