Improved luminescence from tensile-strained compound semiconductor quantum wells with dielectric-rod photonic crystals

Abstract: We investigated the use of dielectric-rod photonic crystals on a tensile-strained dilute nitride gain medium. After applying the patterned photonic crystal rods to GaInNAs quantum wells with a heterostructure having optical confinement, we observed enhanced extracted luminescence efficiency from the surface depending on the correlated variation in the transverse magnetic photonic band structure.
