Improved Performance of Ionic Liquid Supercapacitors by using Tetracyanoborate Anions

Abstract: Supercapacitors are energy storage devices designed to operate at higher power densities than conventional batteries, but their energy density is still too low for many applications. Efforts are made to design new electrolytes with wider electrochemical windows than aqueous or conventional organic electrolytes in order to increase energy density. Ionic liquids (ILs) with wide electrochemical stability windows are excellent candidates to be employed as supercapacitor electrolytes. ILs containing tetracyanoborat… Show more

“…The major problem with the development of cost-efficient, flexible, and portable ESs is the lower energy density especially as compared to those of rechargeable batteries. , The energy density of a supercapacitor system is proportional to the specific capacitance and square of the operating voltage ( E = 1/2 CV 2 , where C = specific capacitance and V = operating voltage), , so it is clear that the total energy density of ESs can be improved with the combination of an enhanced specific capacitance and a wider operating voltage. In general, a high operating voltage is obtained by connecting several supercapacitor cells in series, but this reduces the total capacitance and increases the resistance as there is always a trade-off between working voltage and the capacitance.…”

“…In recent years, the structures and properties of the ionic liquid–electrode system have been revealed by experimental technologies, electrochemical methods, atomic force microscopy (AFM), ,, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and spectroscopy technology (surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, , infrared spectroscopy, sum-frequency spectroscopy, etc.). Meanwhile, the capacitance curve shape and the surface adsorption state of the system are also discussed.…”
