Improvement in Conduction Velocity after Optic Neuritis Measured with the Multifocal VEP

Abstract: A substantial percentage of ON/MS patients show a long-term improvement in conduction velocity. Because this improvement can be local, the mfVEP should allow these improvements to be monitored in patients with ON/MS.

“…The monocular probability plot for latency was estimated with cross-correlation function in MAT-LAB [29,30] and comparison with the normative database. The monocular latency probability plots were also color coded with saturated color circle and desaturated color circle for deviation from control with P value \ 0.01 and P value \ 0.05, respectively.…”

“…The monocular latency probability plots were also color coded with saturated color circle and desaturated color circle for deviation from control with P value \ 0.01 and P value \ 0.05, respectively. Blue and red color was used for right eye and left eye, respectively [29,30]. The black circle indicates no significant difference.…”

“…Electrophysiological evidence of demyelinization may improve, worsen or remain the same (e.g. [2,3]). Thus, without electrophysiological testing a diagnosis of non-acute ON rests on an expensive MRI test.…”

“…After the recording, additional mfVEP responses were calculated by subtraction (with channels 1, 2, and 3 corresponding to the mfVEP results derived from the left, middle, and right recording electrodes): Oblique channel 4 = channel 1 -channel 2; oblique channel 5 = channel 1 -channel 3; and horizontal channel 6 = channel 2 -channel 3. We used this method as a reference because it is established and well described in the literature [6][7][8][9][10]. Written consent was obtained from all participants.…”
