Improving Dialysis Adherence for High Risk Patients Using Automated Messaging: Proof of Concept

Abstract: Comorbidities and socioeconomic barriers often limit patient adherence and self-management with hemodialysis. Missed sessions, often associated with communication barriers, can result in emergency dialysis and avoidable hospitalizations. This proof of concept study explored using a novel digital-messaging platform, EpxDialysis, to improve patient-to-dialysis center communication via widely available text messaging and telephone technology. A randomized controlled trial was conducted through Washington Universi… Show more

“…Recent reviews have focused on medical and sociodemographic variables suggesting time on dialysis, recurrent hospitalizations, psychological and psychiatric morbidity, presence of other comorbidities, younger age, non‐Caucasian ethnicity, being a smoker, and being single/divorced/widowed as clinically relevant risk factors . These findings suggest the need to focus on psychosocial modifiable variables related to social support, in particular marital support, as they seem to play a protective role towards a better adjustment to ESRD and to dialysis …”

“…The software was built on algorithms trained to identify at-risk patients and to order a relevant screening test for CKD [35]. A digital messaging platform, EpxDialysis, has improved patient-to-dialysis center communication and adherence to dialysis therapy via text messaging and telephone technology [36]. ML has also been used to develop a device to improve dialysis treatment and optimize the shape of an arteriovenous fistula, and to suppress blood flow turbulences in preclinical trials [37].…”
