Improving spatial data in health geographics: a practical approach for testing data to measure children’s physical activity and food environments using Google Street View

Abstract: Background Geographic information systems (GIS) are often used to examine the association between both physical activity and nutrition environments, and children’s health. It is often assumed that geospatial datasets are accurate and complete. Furthermore, GIS datasets regularly lack metadata on the temporal specificity. Data is usually provided ‘as is’, and therefore may be unsuitable for retrospective or longitudinal studies of health outcomes. In this paper we outline a practical approach to… Show more

“…Both researchers represent studies in the realms of architectural planning based on spatial design and sociology centered on children's social issues. Melody Smith, the author with the most publications in the WOS database, focuses on the relationship between children's health and the environment [38][39][40]. Karen Witten, a New Zealand scholar, focuses on realizing children's rights, such as the right to participation and the right to use space in the city [41][42][43].…”

“…One of the features provided to users is that users can create personal and custom maps according to their individual needs [11]. Google map itself have often been used in providing road or route recommendations for users [12] [13], used in planning the location of electric charging stations for electric-powered vehicles [14] determining agricultural locations with satellite imagery [15], minimizing accidents [14] [3], to classify children's health [16] and determine the location of water pipe damage [8]. However, the use of google maps for officers' route recommendations were very limited and in this research, we proposed a new mechanism that can be proposed for the survey officer to minimize error scope and other problems in field survey caused by a restriction in location or because PPKM.…”

“…The challenge of designing liveable cities requires approaches which can combine knowledge from different fields, using more integrated methods to address the increasing complexity of our urban environments. The ongoing advancement of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and their incorporation into everyday life make it possible to conduct urban analysis and design exercises at much higher degrees of accuracy (Batty, 2012;Whitehead et al, 2021, Zhang et al, 2019.…”
