Improving the Capacity of QR Code by Using Color Technique

Abstract: Now a days Quick Response (QR) codes are used everywhere, we can see them on posters, magazine ads, websites, product packaging and so on. Maximum storage capacity of QR code using only two colors (black & white) is 4296 characters in version 40. This capacity can be further improved by considering more colors along with black and white i.e.; red, blue, green etc. or by using multiplexing technique. In this paper a new color QR code generation algorithm is proposed, which uses both multiplexing technique and c… Show more

“…In addition, expanding the data capacity of QR codes by increasing colors [9], [10] is also the mainstream of current research. The added colors to QR codes are prone to cause color distortion [11], color confusion [12] and other problems, which bring great challenges to the decoding. Color-coding [13] and multiplexing [14] are pervasively used technical approaches to study color QR codes.…”

“…Nutchanad Taveerad et al [5] realized the raise of data density by encoding and decoding information with custom colours. Pillai, et al [6,7] increased the data capacity of QR code and ensuring its robustness based on colour coding technology. Galiyawala, et al [8,9] applied multiplexing technology [10] to compound multiple QR codes into a colour QR code, whose capacity is 24 times that of black-and-white QR code of the same size.…”

“…Many techniques have been proposed on how to encode and decode a QR Code that can store the larger size of data and this includes multilayers [16,17] multiplexing [18], compression [19] and base64 encoding/decoding [20]. This study proposes a technique that improves the data capacity of a QR Code by merging for the mentioned techniques and tested in QR Code version 40.…”
