The Effect of Problem-Based Learning in Science Education on Academic Achievement: A Meta-Analytical Study

This meta-analysis study aimed to scrutinize the effect of the problem-based learning (PBL) approach on students’ academic achievement in science lessons compared to the traditional instructional approach. As research data, the researcher accessed 55 experimental studies as a result of steps of a systematic review with the keywords “problem-based learning,” “science,” and “academic achievement or success” from the Education Resources Information Center, Scopus, Web of Science, Proquest, Taylor and Francis, Center of Higher Education National Thesis Center, and Wiley Online databases. The results showed that the PBL method used in science education had a high effect size on academic achievement compared to the traditional instructional method. The results also explained significant differences between the effect sizes of publication types (conference papers, articles, master’s thesis, and doctoral thesis). On the other hand, they demonstrated that academic achievement was similar in the nationality of the studies, educational levels, instructional variations with PBL, and relevant science areas. It is expected that integrating innovative instructional approaches into PBL could guide researchers who establish a research problem about how it can affect science academic achievement.

This study aims to evaluate students’ indication-based learning motivation as well as the level of animation-based learning motivation in the class XI Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA) at Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) Negeri 2 Rantau Utara on human digestive system material. Descriptive statistical analysis is used in the research method’s quantitative component. Out of the 141 students in the XI Science class, 105 participants were randomly chosen from three classrooms using a purposive sampling technique. Instrument testing was done to ascertain the reliability and accuracy of the angles, questioner. The study’s methodology used the Student Learning Motivation Questionnaire. Data analysis techniques using quantitative descriptive analysis assisted by SPSS for Windows program. The findings revealed that students in class XI IPA 1 had extremely high levels of learning motivation (82.09), class XI IPA 2 had good levels 72.31, and XI IPA 3 had low levels 64.77 (good). Student motivation is measured by indicators such as persistence in learning, which has an average value of 77.65(good), tenacity in overcoming challenges, which has a value of 72.51(good), interest in learning, which has a value of 82.57(very good), achievement in learning, which has a value of 81.10(very good), and independent indicator in learning, which has a value of 74.21(good). Teachers should be able to use learning innovations like animated media or other interactive media to continue motivating students to learn as a result of this study’s follow-up findings. This will ensure that students are always interested in what they are learning.

A motivação para aprender pode levar a um melhor desempenho acadêmico e melhores condições para a aquisição de conhecimentos, além disso, os comportamentos colaborativos entre estudantese professores, que requerem competência social, podem propiciar ambientes mais agradáveis e cooperativos, gerando uma melhor percepção do clima escolar. O objetivo deste estudo foi examinar a relação entre as variáveis Habilidades Sociais (HS), Motivação para aprender (MA) e Clima Escolar (CE), e identificar as variáveis que explicam CE. A amostra para o estudo incluiu 384 alunos do último ano do Ensino Fundamental e 393 alunos do primeiro ano do Ensino Médio de escolas públicas do Rio de Janeiro. Os dados foram coletados usando o Inventário de Habilidades Sociais para Adolescentes, a Escala de Motivação para Aprendizagem para Universitários e a Escala de Clima Escolar de Delaware-estudantes, e analisados usando testes de correlação, comparações de médias y regressão linear múltipla (RLM). Os principais resultados mostraram uma associação positiva e fraca entre MA e CE. Os resultados da RLM apontaram que apenas a MA explica o CE, como um dos fatores psicossociais relacionados ao desempenho acadêmico e um fator determinante no aprendizagem e sucesso acadêmico. O estudo proporciona dados sobre o impacto das HS, MA e CE dos estudantes em sua aprendizagem.
