“…Suicide attempts may be linked to relapse because research in alcohol and/or drug users indicates that they can reflect high levels of both impulsivity and depression (Aharonovich et al, 2002;Dougherty et al, 2004;Koller et al, 2002;Swann et al, 2005), which are important predictors of relapse (e.g., Fox et al, 2008;Greenfield et al, 1998;Miller, 1991). Thus, examining past suicidal behavior in alcohol-dependent patients could be one way to focus on a group of patients with more severe psychopathology who are also at a higher risk for relapse.…”

“…According to some estimates, more than 40% of all patients seeking treatment for alcohol dependence report a suicide attempt at some point in their lifetime (Anderson et al, 1995;Koller et al, 2002;Roy, 2003). Additionally, impulsive suicide attempts are common in those with an alcohol use disorder (Ikeda et al, 2001) and may be especially important in understanding suicidal behaviors and the process of relapse in individuals with alcohol dependence (Conner, 2004).…”

“…Its association with an increased risk for suicide in our bivariate analysis (Table 3) suggests personality might play a role in averse-life-event-related "impulsive" suicide. Previously, a number of studies showed that the most attributing factors of personality disorders to suicidal behaviors were impulsivity, aggression, and hostility [37,[75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86] . Since about half of suicides in China were unplanned and impulsive, the relationship between personality traits/disorder and suicides is worthy of further exploration with larger sample size studies.…”
