Safety and security are among the most basic needs in life and are essential in tourism as in other research areas; thus, researchers need to focus on the topic. Since the 1970s, when the first scientific paper on tourism safety was published, the number of research in this field has significantly increased. This study aims to carry out a bibliometric analysis on tourism safety and security research conducted over the past forty-five years. The literature on the subject includes 597 studies obtained from the Scopus database. VOSviewer scientific mapping software programme was used to perform the analysis. The software covers keywords of tourism safety and security topics, influential authors, publications, journals, and countries and identifies several techniques such as co-citation, concept association, and bibliographic coupling. The rapid increase in the number of research and citations shows that the topic of tourism safety and security has drawn the attention of researchers in the last 12 years. The analysis results revealed that the study with the strongest link with other publications is “Tourist's perceptions of safety and security while visiting Cape Town”. The researcher who contributed the most to the field with the author citation is Michael C. Hall; the journal making the most substantial impact is Tourism Management. Finally, the most productive country is United States of America. The current study contributes to expanding the literature on tourism safety and security and offers an overview for further research in this field.

There are many published bibliometric works in the literature on the broadly understood topics of tourism, sustainability, and security (STS). Most of these studies present an indexed approach, showing the impact of works, journals, spatial diversity, and the most frequently published or cited authors. The research and analysis undertaken in our work had a different goal: they were an attempt to answer questions about the degree of interest of researchers in the issue of STS, the dynamics of research devoted to the topics of STS, and internal differentiation in the broadly understood concept of security/danger in STS research. Data from the Web of Science journal database were used for the analysis. To determine the number of articles devoted to the topics of security, tourism, and sustainability, several combined keywords and simple statistical analyses were used. In the last 10, and especially 5 years (2019–2023), in each of the three topic groups, there has been an exponential increase in publications in journals indexed in the WoS database. In the sustainability category, risk and security received the most responses; in the tourism, COVID-19, and risk category; and in the tourism, sustainability, risk, and COVID-19 category. The use of keywords indicated thematic diversity in the field of security in each of the examined categories. The greatest interest among STS researchers was in studies related to the “COVID-19” threat. The results of the analysis allowed us to conclude there is an ongoing process of securitization in tourism research.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the scientific community has been trying to clarify various problems, such as the mechanism of virus transmission, environmental impact, and socio-economic impact. The spread of COVID-19 in the atmospheric environment is variable and uncertain, potentially resulting in differences in air pollution. Many scholars are striving to explore the relationship between air quality, meteorological indicators, and COVID-19 to understand the interaction between COVID-19 and the atmospheric environment. In this study, we try to summarize COVID-19 studies related to the atmospheric environment by reviewing publications since January 2020. We used metrological methods to analyze many publications in Web of Science Core Collection. To clarify the current situation, hotspots, and development trends in the field. According to the study, COVID-19 research based on the atmospheric environment has attracted global attention. COVID-19 and air quality, meteorological factors affecting the spread of COVID-19, air pollution, and human health are the main topics. Environmental variables have a certain impact on the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and the prevalence of COVID-19 has improved the atmospheric environment to some extent. The findings of this study will aid scholars to understand the current situation in this field and provide guidance for future research.
