In‐field volatile analysis employing a hand‐held portable GC‐MS: emission profiles differentiate damaged and undamaged yellow starthistle flower heads

Abstract: The portable GC-MS system distinguished the treatments based on their detected volatile profiles. Additional statistical analysis identified five possible biomarker volatiles for the treatments, among them cyclosativene and copaene, which indicated damaged flower heads.

“…Hervibore-induced 2-dodecanone has been detected as a tomato volatile blend component 31 . The alkane tetradecane, a known semiochemical for many arthropods 32 , has also been identified as a volatile biomarker indicating damaged flower head tissue 33 . The most remarkable finding of our study was that three aliphatic compounds were mainly detected after an aphid attack in plants grown in the inoculated microbial soil.…”

“…However, GC/DMS has many advantages that make it ideal for these environments. The devices are small and easily transported; they operate under normal atmospheric conditions and temperatures, even without the need for supplemental gases; they can be used in in situ investigations that avoid having to remove plant material from quarantine facilities or elaborate sample preparations; they allow for diagnostic developments that may be adaptable to field studies for real-time disease analysis; GC/DMS has been in increasing demand for biological applications (13 (19) (20), which may be easily installed in such greenhouses, but DMS allows for detection of VOCs not resolved by GC/MS, such as the separation of certain isomers (21). Given the importance of isomers in biological signal transduction pathways, resolving these metabolite compounds is frequently important.…”

“…The technique of volatile analysis poses analytical challenges and must be adapted either to laboratory or field experiments. Portable gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) represents the best compromise for studies investigating both biotic and abiotic stresses in field research . The isoprene molecule (C 5 H 8 ) has been extensively studied with real‐time volatile collection methods using proton transfer reaction/mass spectrometry (PTR‐MS) technology .…”
